Her mother said, “Then I’m still coming. You can decide after I get there.”

That answer made the choice feel less like a test.

Nora spent the night in the infirmary guest room.

Mae was allowed to stay until another counselor walked her back to a different cabin. Before leaving, she set the pillow on Nora’s bed.

“I’m sorry I didn’t say more sooner.”

Nora looked at her.

“You said something.”

“Not enough.”

Nora thought about the way Mae’s voice had shaken in the doorway.

“More than me.”

Mae shook her head. “You were the one it was happening to.”

The sentence stayed with Nora.

At home she had imagined brave people as those who always spoke immediately. At camp, bravery looked messier. Sometimes it was a barefoot girl carrying a stolen pillow down a dark path because the first adult had not listened properly.

The next morning, Nora’s mother arrived before breakfast.

She came into the infirmary wearing yesterday’s jeans and a sweatshirt over her pajama shirt. Nora laughed when she noticed.

Her mother looked down.

“I dressed in the car.”

The laugh turned into a sob before Nora could stop it.

Her mother held her until both passed.

Then they sat with the director and the nurse.

The director had spent the night gathering information.

The second counselor had checked Nora’s cabin. Her bedding was still on the floor. Wet clothing from the canoe incident had been shoved behind a trunk. The chair used to block the door had scrape marks matching the floor near the entrance. Two campers admitted helping Brynn push it into place.

The journal note was not an isolated joke.

The girls had been escalating for days.

Leah had known parts of it.

Not everything.

Enough.

She had heard about the door before dinner. She had seen Nora’s bunk card written on earlier in the week and told the girls to stop. Mae had told her the journal was missing. Leah had decided reporting the incidents formally would turn cabin tension into “a bigger drama” and had tried to manage it informally.

The director said, “That decision failed Nora.”

Nora’s mother replied, “It also taught the other girls there was no real consequence.”

He nodded.

Leah was suspended from camper supervision pending a personnel review.

Brynn and the two girls most involved were removed from the cabin immediately. Their parents were contacted. Camp policy allowed dismissal for repeated harassment, property interference, and deliberately excluding a camper from assigned lodging.

By noon, the director informed Nora’s mother that Brynn would be sent home. One of the other girls would also leave. The third, who had participated in blocking the door but had come forward during interviews and had not been involved in the journal, would remain only after her parents agreed to a behavior plan and cabin reassignment.

Nora listened without satisfaction.

Brynn leaving did not put her dry clothes back in the duffel or erase the note from the journal.

Her mother understood.

“Do you still want to go home?” she asked.

Nora looked out the infirmary window.

Campers were crossing toward breakfast. Someone carried a canoe paddle. A bell rang near the dining hall.

“I want to shower.”

Her mother smiled slightly. “We can start there.”

The nurse found clean towels. The director arranged a private shower in the staff building so Nora would not have to use the shower block where her pillow had been hidden.

Afterward, she put on dry clothes from the camp store. The director offered them without charge because her belongings had been damaged while under camp supervision.

Nora almost refused.

Her mother touched her arm.

“You do not have to pay twice for what somebody else did.”

Nora accepted the sweatshirt.

It was plain gray.

She liked it because there was no label anyone could inspect.
