The kitchen cabinets had been reorganized. My cast-iron pan was gone from the stove rack. A calendar on the refrigerator listed Diane’s appointments, Megan’s shifts, Ethan’s work meetings, and something called household contribution due beside my name.

Nine hundred dollars.

Again.

I pointed to it.

“You put this on the refrigerator?”

Ethan looked miserable.

“I didn’t.”

Diane answered. “Everyone contributes.”

“Whose mortgage payment comes out of the account?”

Nobody spoke.

“Whose name is on the deed?”

Diane’s lips thinned.

“This is not about technical ownership.”

I stared at her.

“It is literally my house.”

Ethan stepped between us.

“Can we sit down?”

“No.”

I was too tired to sit in a room someone else had rearranged and pretend we were negotiating equal claims.

I pointed toward the living room.

“Where is my Hill Country photograph?”

Ethan flinched.

That hurt more than I expected.

“Where is it?”

“In the office.”

“The room I am supposed to sleep in?”

“Yes.”

I walked downstairs.

The office door stuck because someone had placed a rolled rug behind it. Inside, my desk had been pushed against the wall to make room for a narrow daybed. Boxes filled one corner.

But the photograph was there.

Wrapped in a towel.

Propped behind the desk.

I touched the frame.

At least it had not been thrown away.

That small relief made me angrier.

I turned.

Ethan stood in the doorway.

“I moved it down here,” he said. “Mom wanted to donate it.”

“Why?”

“She said it did not match.”

“And you let her replace it with a rooster.”

“I kept it.”

“You kept it hidden in the room you planned to assign me.”

His face collapsed.

“I know how that looks.”

“No, Ethan. Stop saying how it looks. Tell me what happened.”

He sat on the edge of the daybed.

I stayed standing.

His explanation came in pieces.

Diane’s knee surgery had been real. Megan had come to help for two weeks because Diane could not drive. Ethan had offered the guest room. Diane complained about the stairs. He moved her into our bedroom temporarily.
