Ruby’s name.
Sam’s name.
Other children’s names too.
Her father looked at Kelsey.
“You babysit these families?”
She said nothing.
Then he reached a page marked with tomorrow’s date.
Ruby saw Kelsey’s entire expression collapse.
Her father read the first line.
Then looked toward his daughter.
“What was supposed to happen tomorrow?”
Ruby didn’t know.
But Kelsey clearly did.

Ruby’s father read the first line again without speaking. Then he closed the notebook and put it behind his back, away from Kelsey.
“What was supposed to happen tomorrow?” he asked.
Kelsey folded her arms. “It is not what you think.”
“Then explain it.”
She looked at Ruby. “Those are behavior notes. Your daughter has been having tantrums. I keep records so I can be consistent.”
Ruby stared at her. The word tantrums felt almost clever. It made screaming inside a locked, dark room sound like evidence against the child who was trapped there.
Her father opened the notebook again. “It says, ‘Ruby—dark room, forty-five minutes if she tells Dad. Sam—silent chair after dinner. Increase time if they argue.’ What exactly am I misunderstanding?”
Kelsey’s face went white.
Sam sat on the bottom stair clutching the railing. Ruby’s father turned toward him. “Buddy, come here.”
Sam ran to Ruby instead. He wrapped both arms around her waist.
Kelsey took a step toward the front door.
“Do not leave yet,” Ruby’s father said.
“You cannot keep me here.”
“I am not touching you. I am calling Ruby’s mother and the police. You can decide whether you want to wait or explain later why you walked out while I was reporting that you locked my seven-year-old in a room.”
Kelsey’s cheerful babysitter voice disappeared completely. “This is insane. I was disciplining her because you two refuse to.”
Ruby’s father looked at the external latch. “You locked a child in a room with no window.”
