The milk ran from Ava’s hair onto her school uniform.
Nobody laughed at first.
The cafeteria was too shocked.
Then Ryan smirked.
“Oops.”
Twelve-year-old Ava stared at him.
The empty carton remained tilted in his hand.
A teacher shouted from across the room.
“Ryan!”
He dropped the carton.
“She bumped me.”
Ava didn’t speak.
She had learned exactly how this worked.
Ryan bothered her.
She reacted.
Adults arrived at the end.
He smiled.
She cried.
Somehow both received a warning.
For six weeks he had hidden her notebooks, kicked her chair, whispered insults during assembly, and told classmates her father was in prison.
That last part was true.
Ava had never told anyone.
Ryan somehow knew.
Now the whole grade did.
The cafeteria monitor handed Ava paper towels.
“Go clean up.”
Ryan was sent to the office.
Ava expected nothing to happen.
Again.
In the restroom, her friend Keira helped rinse her hair.
