For the first few minutes, Liam wobbled down the driveway while Margaret walked beside him. He nearly fell twice. Each time, he stopped and looked back, embarrassed.

Margaret did not laugh.

She placed one hand lightly on the seat.

“Try again.”

On the third attempt, he found his balance.

The bicycle moved forward.

Liam’s face opened with joy.

“Grandma, look!”

Margaret walked faster.

“I’m looking.”

He rode to the end of the driveway and back, the silver bow fluttering from the handlebars.

When he stopped, he was breathing hard.

“I didn’t crash.”

“You didn’t.”

“Can we ride together sometime?”

Margaret looked at him.

“Yes.”

“Can Dad come?”

“Yes.”

Daniel stood near the garage, one hand covering his mouth.

Liam ran toward him.

“Dad, I did it!”

Daniel crouched and hugged him.

“I saw.”

Then Liam looked between them.

“Are you two okay?”

Margaret and Daniel exchanged a glance.

“We’re learning,” Margaret said.

Liam nodded, satisfied.

Children did not need perfect adults.

They needed honest ones.

In the months that followed, the family changed in small, unglamorous ways.

Daniel arrived on time.

He called without asking for money.

When Margaret visited the new house, he showed her the budget pinned to the refrigerator. It was not impressive, but it was real.

Emily stopped sending payment reminders.

The first time she thanked Margaret, she did not add a request afterward.

“I was cruel to you,” Emily said one afternoon while they washed dishes together.

Margaret kept rinsing a plate.

“Yes.”
