Margaret folded the drawing and returned it to the envelope.

“I don’t know yet.”

That evening, she went into the garage.

The red mountain bike stood beneath the silver bow, untouched. Dust had settled lightly on one tire.

Margaret removed the bow.

For a moment, she imagined returning the bike to the store.

Then she imagined Liam riding it.

Not as a reward.

Not as proof that the slap had been forgotten.

As a gift given only after the lesson had begun to take root.

She called Daniel.

“Bring Liam on Saturday,” she said.

“Is everything okay?”

“Bring him.”

On Saturday morning, Liam arrived wearing a helmet that was too small. Daniel carried a larger one under his arm.

Margaret led them into the garage.

Liam stopped when he saw the bicycle.

His eyes widened.

The old excitement returned, but it was quieter now. He did not rush forward. He looked at Margaret first.

“Is it mine?”

Margaret nodded.

“It can be.”

He didn’t move.

“What do I have to do?”

“Nothing,” Margaret said. “The gift is not payment for your apology.”

Liam looked uncertain.

“Then why?”

“Because I bought it for you before the dinner. Because I still love you. And because I want you to understand that love can be given freely without becoming something you demand.”

He stepped toward the bicycle.

His fingers touched the handlebar.

Then he turned back.

“Can I ride it here?”

“Not until we talk about the rules.”

Liam nodded seriously.

Margaret explained that he would always ask before taking someone’s things, apologize without expecting a reward, and stop when an adult said stop. Daniel listened beside him.

When she finished, Liam looked at the bicycle.

“I can do that.”

“I hope you will.”

He put on the larger helmet.

Daniel adjusted the strap.
