Caroline had left the road home inside a memory.

Lily slid out of her chair and walked around the table.

She put both arms around his neck.

“You’re crying,” she said.


“Yes.”

“Is that bad?”

“No.”

Noah pushed half his croissant onto Richard’s plate.

It was such an ordinary gesture that it almost broke him again.

Outside, the rain eased.

The silver bracelet on Lily’s wrist caught the chandelier light, the same small flash that had stopped Richard’s breath the first day.

This time he did not see a missing child.


He saw Lily Bennett, wearing the scratches Anna had touched, sitting beside the brother who had carried her through the rain.

And when Richard looked at the two of them, he finally understood what Caroline had tried to tell him years earlier.

Finding family was not the same as possessing it.

Sometimes it meant making enough room for every person who had loved a child before you arrived.
