If they were preparing to prove I could no longer manage my own life, I was going to make sure there was a paper trail that proved exactly what they were doing.

I gathered every document they had created, every question they had asked, every attempt they had made to take control.

I made copies.

I dated them.

I put them in order.

And then I prepared one more document and placed it clean and empty on top of the pile.

My phone was on the table.

Vanessa’s name was still on the screen from her last missed call.

I picked it up and typed a single message.

*I’ve reconsidered. Come over tomorrow. I’ll sign the papers.*

The next afternoon, the front door opened without a knock.

Vanessa walked in first, Carol right behind her, Richard carrying his leather portfolio, Ethan trailing last with his eyes on the floor.

Vanessa saw the folder waiting on the table and smiled.

“See? I knew you’d come to your senses,” she said, reaching for the pen I had placed perfectly beside the signature line.

Richard’s hand was already moving to open his portfolio.

I kept my hand flat on the folder and looked at Ethan.

“Ethan,” I said quietly, “before your mother signs anything — do you want to tell them what the bank told me about your signature?”

His face went white.

Vanessa’s hand froze in mid-air.

And Richard, the lawyer, finally stopped moving toward the door.

The clasp of Richard’s portfolio snapped shut.

Ethan looked at it, then at the narrow strip of healing skin above my eyebrow.

“The bank didn’t say anything about my signature,” he whispered.

“No,” I said. “It said the signature claiming to be mine didn’t match.”

Vanessa lowered her hand.

“There. You mixed it up.”

“I asked Ethan.”

He pulled out the chair opposite me but didn’t sit. His fingers stayed wrapped around its back.

“I signed my part.”

The refrigerator hummed in the kitchen. Somewhere beyond the window, a lawn mower stopped.

“What did you think you were signing?”

He swallowed.

“Permission to be added to your account.”

“Did I give you permission?”

“No.”

Vanessa moved between us.

“He was trying to help.”

I leaned sideways until I could see his face again.

“Let him tell me.”

Ethan’s eyes filled, but he kept them on mine.
