“Start packing. I’m taking my room back.”

I stood in the doorway of the master suite with three movers behind me. Brooke, my daughter-in-law, looked past my shoulder at the men, then back at me.

She laughed in my face.

A few hours earlier, she had tossed her dirty laundry at my feet.

Now she was watching me open the doors to the room she had claimed as her own.

“You can have your precious room,” she said.

I kept my hand on the door and let the movers pass.

That morning, I had been getting ready for brunch when her clothes landed in front of me. Brooke hadn’t asked whether I had time to help.

“Cancel brunch,” she told me. “Wash these, pick up my dry cleaning, and clean the house before my parents get here.”

My son was sitting a few feet away.

Close enough to hear every word.

I looked at Brandon, waiting for him to lift his head, to say something, to remind his wife that I was his mother.

He said nothing.

For months, that silence had followed every order. Somehow, in the home I had helped pay for, my plans had become the easiest ones to cancel.

Brooke waited for me to pick up the laundry.

I looked straight at her.

“No.”

Then I grabbed my keys and walked out.

I went directly to the bank.

Hours later, I came home with the movers and headed upstairs. Now, standing inside the master suite, I could still hear the certainty in Brooke’s voice.

“My husband can afford a luxury apartment.”

She said it as though I needed to be reminded which of us mattered.

“We’ll be in luxury by tomorrow morning.”

Brandon stood near the bed with his phone in his hand. Even now, he hadn’t looked at me long enough to say anything.

I stepped aside so the last mover could enter.

Brooke turned toward my son.

“Brandon, transfer our savings.”

She made the demand easily, already certain he would obey.

I watched him raise his phone.

His thumb stopped moving.

For a moment, nothing in the room changed. Brooke waited. The movers were inside. My keys rested against my palm.

Then I noticed his hands.

They were trembling.

Brandon stared at the screen, his face growing pale. When he finally looked up at his wife, his voice was barely a whisper.

“Brooke… it’s all frozen.”

Her mouth closed.

For the first time that day, she had nothing to tell anyone to do.

Before she could find another word, my attorney stepped into the bedroom carrying a briefcase.

The attorney looked directly at me.

“The forensic accountants just finished reviewing six months of transactions.”
