She poured it over me.

Cold gray water soaked into my hair, streamed down my face, and drenched the wedding dress my father had helped me choose.

Then I heard Ethan laughing softly under his breath.

That hurt more than the slap.


Margaret looked over my ruined dress with a satisfied smile.

“Now you look more suitable for the work.”

Without saying a word, I removed my wedding ring.

Ethan’s laughter stopped.

“What are you doing?”

I placed the ring on the counter.

“You should call your attorney.”

He scoffed.

“Over one little argument?”

I pulled out my phone.

“No. Because tomorrow morning, your family may have a much bigger problem.”

Margaret rolled her eyes.

“You really think threatening us is going to scare me?”

Then my phone started ringing.


The screen showed the name of our company’s chief financial officer.

Ethan noticed immediately.

“Why is Richard Coleman calling you at midnight?”

I answered.

Richard didn’t bother with a greeting.

“Claire, I need your authorization before we freeze the Walker accounts.”

Ethan became completely still.



Margaret’s smile vanished.

“What accounts?” I asked quietly.

Richard paused.

“Every account connected to the two-hundred-million-dollar holding company you inherited from your father.”

Margaret gripped the edge of the counter to steady herself.
