The fork clinked against the plate.

The entire dining room went silent.

Jeremy had not spoken a single word in eight years.

Not since his twin sister died.

Now, on the eighth anniversary of her death, he was finally ready to speak.

And he was pointing straight at his father.

Jeremy and Janice were born eleven minutes apart.

They were inseparable.

They finished each other’s sentences. Slept only when they were together. Shared a silent language no one else understood.

Until the day their father took them to the lake.

They were five years old.

Only Jeremy came home.

He said Janice slipped into the water. That the current pulled her away before he could reach her.

Her body was never found.

The police called it a tragic accident.

But Jeremy was never the same after that day.

At Janice’s funeral, he stood beside her empty grave in a tiny black suit, holding his mother’s hand.

He didn’t cry. He didn’t scream.

He just stopped speaking.

Doctors called it selective mutism triggered by grief.

His mother tried everything. Therapy. Music. Painting. Even a puppy named after Janice’s favorite cartoon.

Nothing worked.

For eight years, Jeremy spoke only with nods and the unsettling look in his eyes.

Every year on the anniversary, the family gathered at his mother’s house.

They placed Janice’s photograph on the mantel. Filled the room with her favorite white flowers. Shared memories of the little girl they lost.

His father always came. But he never sat near Jeremy.

He never met his son’s eyes.

And he always left before dessert.

This year was different.

Jeremy was thirteen. Taller. Sharper. Watching everything.
