The blanket was still there. The tablecloth still spread neatly on the floor.

But her baby was gone.

Lena Carter stood frozen in the doorway of the supply closet, her body refusing to move while her mind screamed.

The soft yellow rattle she had packed that morning sat beside the folded blanket, untouched.

Ellie was gone.

Just 7 months old. Hidden in a closet at the one place her mother swore she would never bring her.

And the restaurant was owned by a man whose name people did not say lightly.

A man no 1 ever saw.

Unless they were called.

And being called was never a good thing.

Ellie just looked up with wide, calm eyes and curled her tiny fingers around the edge of the blanket.

For one hour, everything was fine.

Then the dinner rush began.

And when Lena returned for her 3rd check—

Empty.

The world didn’t shatter all at once. It dropped out from under her in a slow, sickening tilt.

Her breath caught. Her hands shook. She scanned every corner of that closet.

Nothing. No sound. No movement.

Only the echo of her own pulse pounding in her ears.

She had 2 options.

Run and find her daughter before anyone noticed.

Or walk back onto that floor and pretend nothing was wrong.

Because if the wrong person found Ellie first—

If the wrong person found out what Lena had done—
