I watched them from the doorway, the light making their shadows long across the floor, the rabbit tucked under Emma’s arm, the wooden box open on the table beside us, empty, waiting.
Emma turned, reached for my hand, and pulled me into the sun with them.
And we stayed there, the three of us, warm at last, home at last, with the door wide open behind us and no one left out in the cold.
