“Or taken her dinner,” Brian said.

Jessica’s face hardened.

“You wanted me to come here and be humiliated.”

“No,” he said. “I wanted to know whether you understood.”

“I understand that your mother now gets to decide what happens in our marriage.”

Nancy pushed her chair back an inch.

“I have asked for nothing inside your marriage.”

“You don’t have to ask. You sit there looking hurt, and he does whatever you want.”

Brian stared at his wife.

“She asked me for help. I did nothing.”

Jessica turned fully toward him.

“And now you’re going to spend the rest of your life making up for it?”

“I’m going to stop doing it.”

She shook her head.

“You used to know how to handle her.”

The kitchen became very quiet.

Nancy watched Brian’s hands. They had stopped moving.

“Handle her,” he repeated.

“You know what I mean.”

“Yes,” he said. “I finally do.”

Jessica stood.

“If you stay here, don’t expect me to pretend everything is fine when you get home.”

Brian stood more slowly.

“Everything isn’t fine.”

He did not raise his voice. He did not look at Nancy for permission.

“I’m moving into the guest room tonight. We’ll make arrangements from there.”

Jessica searched his face, then looked at Nancy.

“I hope you’re happy.”

Nancy felt tired down to her bones.

“I wanted to eat dinner with my family.”

Jessica picked up her handbag and left.

Brian remained standing beside the table until the car pulled away.

Then he sat down.

Nancy put a glass of water in front of him, but she did not tell him he had made the right decision.

That decision needed to remain his.

The separation began quietly.

Brian rented a small place near the children’s school. He and Jessica arranged a parenting schedule, then worked through the practical decisions with professional help.

Nancy offered him the spare room.

He thanked her and declined.

“I need to learn how to live without making someone else responsible for the difficult parts.”
