Ruth said nothing.
He looked at her.
“There should be.”
“Then perhaps you should call your bank.”
Amber stiffened.
Marcus noticed.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
He looked at her.
“Amber.”
She looked away.
Marcus pulled out his phone.
Amber spoke quickly.
“Don’t.”
He froze.
Ruth watched both of them.
Marcus said, “Why?”
“There’s something I need to tell you.”
He gave a humorless laugh.
“That sentence is getting expensive tonight.”
Amber sat in the chair opposite Ruth.
Her face had lost all color.
Marcus remained standing.
Amber rubbed her hands together.
“I moved some money.”
Marcus frowned.
“What money?”
“From checking.”
“How much?”
She hesitated.
“Amber.”
“Thirty-eight thousand.”
Marcus stared.
Ruth did too.
“Where?”
Amber looked at the floor.
“I paid something.”
“What?”
“My mother.”
Marcus stopped breathing for half a beat.
