A few people laughed softly.
Many had been at the engagement party.
June’s stomach tightened.
Ethan continued.
“I didn’t understand the gift when she gave it to me.”
June looked down.
“I thought I did. I thought it was fabric.”
He paused.
“It wasn’t.”
Claire reached for his hand.
Ethan looked at his mother.
“It was proof that somebody had been paying attention to my life even when I wasn’t paying enough attention to hers.”
June’s eyes filled.
He did not list what she had spent.
Did not tell everyone how much she worked.
Did not turn her sacrifice into performance.
He simply said, “I’m sorry it took me so long to learn the difference.”
Then he raised his glass.
“To Mom.”
June shook her head.
People clapped.
She hated it.
Loved it.
Did not know what to do with her hands.
Later, after most guests had begun dancing, June asked Ethan and Claire to follow her into a small side room.
A wrapped package waited on a chair.
Ethan looked at her.
“Mom.”
Claire smiled.
“You brought it.”
June picked up the package.
“I did.”
She handed it to both of them.
This time Claire did not tear the paper.
She opened it carefully.
The quilt unfolded between them.
Ethan immediately found the new pieces.
Claire touched the fabric from her old dress.
Then the Beaumont uniform.
Her eyes filled.
