Claire smiled nervously.
“I thought we were being honest.”
“We are.”
“I’m sorry.”
June wiped one eye.
“No, that was good.”
Claire relaxed.
“It’s beautiful. It really is. But our living room is cream and gray and—”
“Boring.”
Claire stared.
June smiled.
“Honesty.”
Claire laughed.
“Fine.”
For the first time since they met, June liked her a little.
Not because Claire had changed completely.
Because she had stopped pretending taste was morality.
Claire looked serious again.
“I do want it in the house.”
June’s expression changed.
“If Ethan still gets it.”
“Maybe.”
Claire nodded.
“Fair.”
June stood.
“I have to get back.”
Claire stood too.
At the door, she said, “The wedding.”
June turned.
“We’re cutting it down.”
“How far?”
“Eighty people instead of one forty.”
June blinked.
“You invited one hundred forty?”
Claire looked embarrassed.
“You were on the list.”
“Comforting.”
Claire smiled.
“We canceled the expensive florist.”
“What are you using?”
