“Did you know she wanted me moved to a different table?”

Ethan frowned.

“What?”

“At the engagement dinner.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I was originally seated beside you.”

He looked confused.

“Claire moved me because she wanted her aunt beside you for photographs.”

“That’s not—”

“She told me herself.”

Ethan looked toward the window.

June continued.

“Did you know she asked me not to wear my navy dress because she said it photographed old?”

His jaw tightened.

“No.”

“Did you know she told the planner not to include me in the getting-ready suite on the wedding morning?”

He looked at her sharply.

“What?”

“She said there wouldn’t be enough room.”

“That suite is huge.”

“I know.”

Ethan said nothing.

June looked at him.

“I did not tell you these things because I thought you were happy.”

He stared at the table.

“I kept telling myself they were small.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

June gave him a sad smile.

“Why didn’t you tell me you planned to put my quilt in storage?”

That stopped him.

For a while neither spoke.

Then Ethan whispered, “I didn’t want conflict.”

June nodded.

“Neither did I.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“So we both lied.”

“I suppose we both avoided.”

“That sounds nicer.”

“It usually does.”

He almost smiled.
