“Then why send this?”
“Because you owe sixteen thousand dollars.”
His face tightened.
“You said not to worry about it.”
“I said that two years ago.”
“You can’t just change the rules because you’re mad at Claire.”
June sighed.
“Sit down.”
“I don’t want to sit.”
“Then stand.”
He stared at her.
June pulled out a chair and sat herself.
“I gave you twenty thousand dollars for the consultancy.”
“You invested in it.”
“No.”
“That’s how we talked about it.”
“No, Ethan.”
She pointed to the letter he had signed.
“It says loan.”
He picked it up.
“I know what it says.”
“You paid four thousand back.”
“Then business slowed down.”
“I know.”
“You told me not to worry.”
“Yes.”
“Now suddenly you care?”
June folded her hands.
“I always cared.”
“Then why didn’t you say anything?”
There it was.
A fair question.
June considered it.
“Because I was afraid you’d feel pressured.”
Ethan stared at her.
“That was the point of not asking.”
June nodded.
“Yes.”
He laughed in disbelief.
“So now I’m being punished because you didn’t communicate?”
