“Go away.”

“Kelsey said.”
Sam sat beside the door.
When Kelsey returned, she whispered angrily.
“Bed.”
Sam shook his head.
“Ruby.”
Kelsey grabbed his hand.
“Now.”
Ruby heard his feet disappear upstairs.
Twenty minutes later, the front door opened.
Her father.
Home early.
Kelsey’s cheerful voice instantly filled the hallway.
“You’re back!”
Ruby pounded on the door.
“DAD!”
Silence.
Then footsteps.
“What was that?”
Kelsey answered too fast.
“The washing machine.”
Ruby screamed again.
“DAD!”
The handle moved.
Locked.
Her father’s voice changed.
“Ruby?”
Kelsey laughed nervously.
