“He struck me.”

“He’s a child.”

“He is old enough to know what a hand is.”

Emily’s voice cooled.

“You’ve always been dramatic when you don’t get your way.”

Margaret stared at the phone.

“I gave you money for a mortgage, tuition, repairs, insurance, and a transmission.”

“And we were grateful.”

“You sent me reminders.”

“What do you want, a medal?”

“No. I wanted my family to understand that help is not the same as ownership.”

Emily said nothing.

Margaret continued.

“I will not be spoken to like an employee while being expected to function like a bank.”

“You’re using a child’s mistake to punish all of us.”

“No,” Margaret said. “I’m responding to three years of choices.”

Emily’s breath caught.

For the first time, her certainty faltered.

“Daniel will fix this.”

“I hope he does.”

“You’ll change your mind.”

“I won’t.”

Margaret ended that call too.

For several minutes, she stood alone in the kitchen while the morning grew brighter. Then she opened a drawer and took out a yellow legal pad.

At the top, she wrote:

Daniel’s household.

Below it, she listed every payment she could remember.

Mortgage.

Tuition.

Roof repair.

Transmission.

Orthodontics.

Insurance.

Soccer.

Water heater.

She wrote the amounts beside the ones she knew. Where she didn’t remember, she left a blank.

The page filled quickly.

By noon, Margaret had found bank statements, digital receipts, and old messages. Some of the messages were from Daniel, written in the first year.

“Mom, are you sure?”

“Thank you. I don’t know what we would do.”
