It was better.

It was a child choosing differently in an ordinary moment.

One year after the birthday dinner, Margaret hosted another family meal.

This time, there were no blue balloons.

There was no expensive gift hidden in the garage.

There was a simple chocolate cake Emily had made herself, a bowl of pasta, and a stack of napkins folded by Liam.

Before anyone sat down, Liam placed a glass of water beside Margaret’s plate.

He did it carefully.

Margaret watched him.

“What are you doing?”

“Making sure you have one.”

His voice was casual, but his eyes were serious.

“Thank you.”

He nodded and sat.

Daniel served the food.

Emily asked Margaret about her garden.

Ben told a long story about school.

For a while, the table sounded like an ordinary family table.

Then Daniel stood.

Margaret looked at him.

He held a small envelope.

“I don’t want to make this uncomfortable,” he said.

Emily lowered her fork.

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“This is the first full year I have paid every bill myself.”

Margaret said nothing.

“I still owe you money. I’m not pretending I have erased what happened. But I wanted to give you the first repayment.”

He placed the envelope beside her plate.

Margaret did not open it.

“You don’t have to do this in front of everyone.”

“I need to.”

Daniel looked toward Liam.

“I taught my son that your love meant unlimited access. I taught him wrong. I also let my mother carry responsibilities that belonged to me.”

His voice shook.

“I cannot undo the years I took from you. But I can stop taking.”

The room became quiet.

Margaret looked at the envelope.

“How much is it?”

“The amount I can afford this month.”

“That isn’t the point.”
