“Did I really hurt you?”

“Yes.”

“Did it make you scared?”

“Not scared of you.”

“Then what?”

“Sad about what you were learning.”

He looked down.

“Dad said I have to stop laughing when people get hurt.”

“He’s right.”

“Were you sad when Dad laughed?”

“Yes.”

“Because he’s your son?”

“Yes.”

Liam considered that.

“I love Dad.”

“So do I.”

“But he was wrong.”

“He was.”

“Can people be good and wrong?”

“Most people are both.”

That answer seemed to stay with him.

For the first time, Margaret saw the possibility that the family might not become what it had been. Perhaps it could become something more honest.

A month after the birthday dinner, Daniel asked Margaret to meet him at the bank.

She almost declined.

Then he explained that he wanted her present when he closed the account labeled “Mortgage Support — Daniel.”

He had started making the payments himself.

Not all of them. Not easily.

But consistently.

He had rented a smaller house closer to his new job. Emily and Liam would move there at the end of the month. The old home had become too expensive, and selling it was the only way to clear the worst of the debt.

Emily had resisted until the lender showed her the numbers.

Now she was working part-time at a medical office and taking evening bookkeeping classes.

When Margaret arrived at the bank, Daniel stood beside a teller with a folder in his hand.

He looked embarrassed.

“I didn’t need you to come,” he said.

“I know.”

“I wanted you to see that it’s closed.”

The teller finished the paperwork and slid the final document across the counter.

Daniel signed.

Margaret did not touch it.

He folded it carefully.
