“Technically, Mark signed.”

My son stared at her.

“You said company assets secured it.”

“They weren’t enough.”


Then Jessica reached into her purse.

Pulled out a second phone.

And showed me a video.

My husband.

Hospital bed.

Oxygen tubing.

Weak.

Barely coherent.

Someone outside the frame placed papers in front of him.

“Sign here.”

His hand moved shakily across the page.

My stomach twisted.

Jessica watched my face.

“You’re not going anywhere for Christmas, Linda.”

Her voice softened.

“You’ll host my family. And before Christmas morning, you’ll sign the deed transfer putting the house under Mark’s control.”

“And if I refuse?”

She lifted the phone.

“This goes to the police. I’ll tell them you manipulated him while he was incapacitated.”

Mark looked horrified.

“Jessica—”

“Stay out of this.”

Then I understood.

The thirty guests weren’t merely entitlement.

They were pressure.

Noise.


Witnesses.

A house full of people to make me tired enough, embarrassed enough, frightened enough to sign.

“When?” I asked.

“Christmas Eve.”

I nodded.

“Fine.”

She smiled.

She thought she had won.

Upstairs, I locked my bedroom door and opened the fireproof box my husband had insisted I keep near the closet.

Inside was an envelope in his handwriting.

FOR LINDA — IF NEEDED.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Linda, if Mark or Jessica ever pressures you about the house, call this man before you sign anything.



A business card fell into my lap.
