The moment my daughter-in-law told me to sign over my house before Christmas morning or she would accuse me of exploiting my dying husband, something inside me became completely calm. Jessica thought the hospital video on her phone had finally cornered me. What she didn’t know was that six months before his death, my husband had already prepared for the possibility that someone might try exactly this.

It had started eleven days before Christmas.

Jessica walked into my kitchen carrying three enormous holiday catalogs and dropped them onto the island.

“Christmas.”

I looked up from my coffee.

“What about it?”

“My whole family is spending it here.”

Thirty people.

Her parents.

Sisters.

Children.

Aunts.

Uncles.

All invited to my six-bedroom home without asking me.

Then she opened the catalogs.

Turkey.

Prime rib.

Side dishes.

Desserts.

Christmas breakfast.

Gluten-free options for her mother.

“The guest rooms need fresh linens too,” she added. “And the basement bathroom smells weird.”

I stared at her.

“You expect me to cook and clean for thirty people?”

“It’s Christmas.”

“Your Christmas.”

Her face tightened.

“The invitations already went out.”

I smiled.

“Perfect. I’ll be on a tropical vacation. You can cook and clean for all thirty of them yourself.”

Jessica went white.

Then my son, Mark, walked into the kitchen holding his phone.

“Mom. The bank just called about Dad’s estate.”

My husband had died six months earlier after a brutal battle with cancer.

“What happened?”

Mark swallowed.

“They say there’s a lien against the house.”

I stood straighter.

“That’s impossible.”

He put the call on speaker.

A bank representative explained that the property had been presented as collateral for a secured private loan.

Approximately two million dollars.

The paperwork listed Mark and Jessica as authorized parties.

I turned toward them.

“What did you sign?”

Mark looked at Jessica.

That was enough.

She barely flinched.

“It’s temporary.”

“You used my home as collateral?”
