Sophie grinned and ran ahead toward the house, her laughter echoing across the field.

I followed slowly, drinking in the sight of her.

My daughter.

My light.

The reason I’d survived everything.

Behind me, the pond settled back into stillness.

The stone I’d thrown was somewhere at the bottom now, carrying my wish into the earth.

And I knew—I knew with absolute certainty—that it had already come true.

Sophie would always know she was loved.

Because I would spend every day of my life showing her.

Not with grand gestures or expensive gifts.

But with presence. With patience. With the kind of steady, unconditional love I’d never received myself.

I would break the cycle.

I would be the mother I’d always needed.

And Sophie would grow up whole.

As I reached the house, I turned back one last time to look at the mountains, the fields, the life I’d built from the ashes of everything I’d lost.

It was beautiful.

And it was mine.

Sophie called from the porch. “Mama, come on! I want to make cookies!”

I smiled and walked toward her, toward home, toward the future.

The past was behind me.

Richard was gone. My mother was gone.

The fear was gone.

All that remained was love.

And it was enough.

It was everything.
