Part 3: Keep Your Mistress—I’m Keeping Our Child

“You made me believe every failure would destroy us.”

“Because it would have.”

“No. Because you needed me afraid.”

Margaret slapped him.

The sound snapped through the ballroom.

Daniel’s head turned with the force of it. A red mark rose across his cheek. Amy took a sharp breath, and Vanessa moved forward, but Daniel lifted one hand to stop them.

Margaret’s palm trembled.

“I will not stand here while you accuse me in front of strangers.”

“You accused my wife in front of strangers,” he said, facing her again. “You called her a liability. You told me her family was beneath us. You told me a child would complicate the company.”

Margaret’s eyes shifted.

That was answer enough.

Amy felt the floor beneath her become unreal.

“What did you tell him about me?” she asked.

Margaret said nothing.

Daniel looked down at the folder. “She told me Amy’s father had stolen from the company.”

Amy stared at him.

“My father?”

“He told me your family had been trying to gain access to our accounts,” Daniel said. “He told me your marriage was a trap.”

Amy’s voice came out thin. “You believed that?”

“I believed my mother.”

The honesty was so raw that it hurt more than an excuse would have.

Amy looked toward Margaret. “My father died believing you destroyed his business.”

Margaret’s expression remained cold. “Your father destroyed his own business.”

“He said your company had purchased his patents through a shell corporation.”

“He was a dishonest man.”

“He kept copies of every contract.”

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were photocopies, bank records, emails, and photographs of signatures. He spread them across the table while people gathered closer despite themselves. On one page, Margaret’s assistant had authorized a transfer from Daniel’s company to a consulting firm registered in Vanessa’s name.

Vanessa stared at it.

“I never received that money,” she whispered.

“You received enough,” Margaret said.

“I received a salary from the foundation. I never knew it came from him.”

“You signed the agreement.”

“I signed a job offer.”

“You signed whatever was placed in front of you because you wanted the position.”

Vanessa’s face hardened. “You told me Amy was violent. You told me Daniel was trapped. You said he slept in the guest room and was filing for divorce.”

Daniel looked at her. “I never said that.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you continue?”

Vanessa swallowed. “Because I wanted to believe you would choose me.”

There it was—the part no one could assign to Margaret. The part Vanessa had to carry herself.

She looked at Amy.

“I am sorry.”

Amy did not answer immediately. Vanessa’s apology could not restore the appointments Daniel had missed or erase the months Amy had spent crying in a bathroom with one hand over her mouth so the staff would not hear. But it was the first truthful thing Vanessa had said all night.

“Be sorry to yourself too,” Amy said. “You let someone turn your loneliness into a weapon.”

Vanessa nodded, tears gathering but not falling.

A man in a dark suit approached the table. Daniel’s attorney, Mr. Hale, had been standing near the entrance, watching with a face that had grown more grim with every revelation.

“Daniel,” he said quietly, “we need to leave now.”

Margaret turned on him. “You work for this family.”

“I work for the company.”

“You are paid by my son.”

“I am paid to tell him when he is being robbed.”

Daniel looked at him. “How long have you known?”

“About the transfers? Two weeks. About the forged signatures? I suspected for months. I could not act without your authorization.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because every time I tried, your mother replaced the meeting, changed the files, or told me you were unavailable.”

Margaret’s hand closed around the edge of the table.

Amy saw it then: the fear beneath the anger. Margaret had not expected the truth to arrive with witnesses. She had built her power out of private conversations, locked doors, and carefully separated people. Tonight, every person she had controlled was standing within reach of the others.

Daniel picked up the first page.

“Call the police.”
