Part 1: Keep Your Mistress—I’m Keeping Our Child

“Keep your mistress. I’m keeping my child.”

Amy placed her wedding ring in Margaret’s hand.

Above them, the ballroom chandelier glittered. Around them, cameras kept flashing. And a few feet away, Daniel pulled away from Vanessa as though he had only just realized where he was standing.

His eyes fixed on his wife.

“Child?”

The word cracked in his throat.

Amy didn’t reach for him. She didn’t look at Vanessa. She opened her purse with fingers that refused to move as quickly as she wanted them to.

For a moment, Daniel watched her search inside it.

Then she took out an ultrasound.

“Four months,” she said. “You missed every appointment.”

He stared at the small print in her hand.

Four months of a pregnancy he was only hearing about now. Appointments he hadn’t attended. A child whose first picture was being held between them in a ballroom, while the woman he had been with stood close enough to hear every word.

Amy held the ultrasound where he could see it.

Margaret moved first.

She snatched it from Amy’s hand.

“Not here.”

The words were quiet, but the movement wasn’t.

Amy’s fingers remained open for a second, still shaped around the photograph that was no longer there.

Daniel looked at the ultrasound in his mother’s hand.

Then at her face.

“You knew?”

Margaret had Amy’s wedding ring.

Now she had the first picture of Amy’s child, too.

And somehow, standing beneath that chandelier, she seemed more concerned about where this conversation was happening than what her son had just learned.

Amy went still.

Until that moment, she had been looking at a husband who had missed every appointment and another woman who had taken his attention.

Now she was watching his mother.

Margaret lowered her voice.

“Vanessa was supposed to make you leave before you got pregnant.”

No one needed to ask her to repeat it.

Amy’s gaze stayed on Margaret. Daniel’s face changed as he looked toward Vanessa, then back at his mother.

The cameras kept flashing.

Nothing around them had stopped. The ballroom was still bright. The chandelier still hung overhead. But the words Margaret had spoken made everything that came before them look different.

Vanessa wasn’t simply the woman beside Daniel.

There had been a purpose.

A deadline.

Before Amy got pregnant.

Amy looked at the ultrasound Margaret was holding. The same woman who had taken it from her had just admitted that Vanessa was supposed to make Daniel leave.

Daniel drew a breath.

This time, his voice didn’t crack on a single word.

“Why were you paying someone to destroy my marriage?”

Margaret stood facing him, Amy’s ring and ultrasound still in her hands.

Amy waited.

For the first time, Daniel was asking his mother a question that couldn’t be answered by telling his wife to be quiet.

Margaret’s thumb tightened over the edge of the ultrasound until the paper bent.

A tiny white crease appeared across the black-and-white image.

Amy saw it and moved forward.

“Give that back.”

Margaret looked at her with sudden contempt. “You have made enough of a spectacle.”

Daniel reached for the photograph, but Margaret pulled it against her chest.

“Mother.”

The single word carried through the nearest circle of guests. Conversations faltered. A waiter stopped beside a table with a tray of champagne. Somewhere behind Amy, a camera shutter clicked twice in quick succession.

Vanessa took one step backward.

That movement drew Daniel’s attention.

“You knew about this?” he asked her.

Vanessa’s lips parted. She had been composed when she stood beside him, one hand resting against his sleeve, her black dress and silver earrings catching the chandelier light. Now her face had lost its color.

“I knew your mother wanted us to talk.”

“About what?”

“About your marriage.”

“What did she promise you?”
