Part 5: He Tore Up Her Place Card—Then His Boss Recognized Her

Daniel stared at her.

“To punish me?”

“To have enough money for the rest of my life.”

“You already have enough.”

“You don’t know what I have.”

He started to answer, then stopped.

That silence told her he had never asked.

She described the rent on her apartment, the prescriptions, the repair she had postponed on her car. She explained how much of her retirement money remained tied up in a house she did not live in.

She kept her voice level.

He listened as though she were describing a stranger.

“I can pay you,” he said.

“The overdue rent?”

“Eventually.”

“And the eighty thousand you wanted to borrow?”

His eyes dropped.

Ruth folded her hands.

“You will have ninety days to arrange somewhere else. The attorney will put everything in writing. I’m not changing my mind.”

“What if I can’t find anything?”

“Then you’ll need to choose something less expensive than you want.”

He looked at her sharply.

She had said those words to herself for decades.

“I’m your son.”

“Yes,” she said. “That is why this hurts.”

He left the flowers on the conference table.

For two weeks, he barely spoke to her.

A cousin called to ask whether Ruth was really putting Daniel out of his home. Ruth gave her the facts without embellishment.

She did not send photographs of the torn card.

She did not need an audience to make her decision legitimate.

At work, Daniel’s private loan remained refused. Martin neither rescued him nor spread the Thanksgiving story through the office.

Daniel sold his second car. He canceled the catering deposit for a party he had planned in December. He met with a debt counselor and began making calls he had avoided for months.

Ruth learned these things later.

At the time, all she knew was that nobody called asking her to pay.

The house went on the market in January.

Before the photographs were taken, Ruth returned to walk through it with the agent. Daniel waited in the kitchen while she examined the rooms she had financed and rarely used.

The spare bedroom contained a desk, exercise equipment, and unopened boxes.

There was no bed.

She stood in the doorway longer than she intended.

Daniel appeared behind her.

“I was going to clear it.”

“When?”
