The old photograph had once seemed to Victoria like proof of a closed world that existed before loss. Now it sat beside four living people making something new out of what remained.

Miller asked whether he could take a picture of them.

Victoria almost refused.

Then she changed her mind.

They stood near the window.

Andrew leaned on his cane. Victoria held David’s watch. Blake stood beside his father, leaving space rather than pulling anyone into position.

Miller took the photograph.

Months later, he mailed Victoria a copy.

She placed it behind the old team photograph in the same protective sleeve.

Two images, decades apart.

In the first, a young David Kane held up a wounded Andrew Warren.

In the second, nobody was wounded, nobody was being carried, and nobody needed to prove who belonged.

Victoria liked the second one more.

On quiet evenings, Victoria sometimes opened the sleeve and looked at both photographs together. The older image still hurt in places. The newer one did not cancel it. That was never the point. One picture showed people surviving a dangerous night. The other showed people learning, much later, how not to make one another smaller. She decided both belonged in the same frame.

Together, they told a fuller story than either photograph could have carried alone.

Victoria slid both photographs back into the sleeve, closed the brass clasp on her old bag, and heard David’s restored watch ticking beside them.
