Part 3: Fourteen Guests Expected Dinner in My House—But My Son Knew Something His Wife Didn’t

The front door did not slam.

That almost made it worse.

She went upstairs.

Liam started after her.

Then he stopped.

I looked at him.

“Go talk to your wife,” I said.

He nodded.

“But do not make me the villain so the conversation is easier.”

His face tightened.

“I won’t.”

Dinner happened around paper plates.

Fourteen relatives who had arrived expecting a polished meal sat wherever they could find room. Two people ate at the kitchen island. Three teenagers took their pizza into the den. Someone found an old folding chair in the garage.

It was messy.

It was also the first family meal in my house in months that I did not serve.

Denise sat beside me with a slice of vegetable pizza.

“I owe you an apology.”

“You did not invite yourself.”

“I believed Harper.”

“That is different.”

“I also noticed she was treating this like her house and told myself it was none of my business.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

Denise gave a tired smile. “Because when Harper is happy, everyone gets peace.”

There was that word again.

Peace.

I looked toward the stairs.

“No,” I said. “Everyone gets quiet.”

Denise nodded.

Liam came down forty minutes later alone.

His face was pale.

“Where is Harper?”

“In the bedroom.”

“Is she coming down?”

“I don’t know.”

He looked around at the pizza boxes.

“I’m sorry.”

“About which part?”

He almost smiled.

“The lease. The guests. The last four months. Pick one.”

“Start with the lease.”

He sat across from me.

“I should not have signed it without telling her.”

“No.”

“But I’m not canceling it.”

I waited.

“We need to move out.”

“Yes.”

“And if Harper doesn’t want to move there with me, I need to face that instead of using your house to postpone it.”

That was the first adult sentence I had heard from my son in a long time.

“When?” I asked.

“The lease starts in ten days.”

I nodded.

He looked surprised.

“You’re not angry?”

“I am angry you hid it. I am relieved you are leaving.”

Both emotions seemed to hurt him.

Good.

They were both true.

Harper came downstairs after everyone left.
