Serena was granted full custody. Her ex-husband was ordered to pay restitution. He was ordered to stay away. He was ordered to never contact them again.

Lucia ran into Serena’s arms. They cried together. They laughed together. They walked out of the courthouse together.

Victor was waiting outside. He was standing beside his car. His four sons were in the back seat. They waved at Serena through the window. She waved back.

“Thank you,” she said.

“You’re welcome.”

“Why did you do it?”

He looked at her. At the woman who had walked into his house and changed everything. At the woman who had seen his sons. At the woman who had seen him.

“Because you saw us,” he said. “And we saw you.”

The final image: Serena and Lucia standing on the porch of Victor’s mansion, the four boys playing in the yard, Victor watching from the doorway. The sun was setting. The sky was pink and gold. Lucia was laughing. The boys were laughing. And for the first time in years, Serena felt something she had forgotten how to feel. Peace.

She was not the nanny. She was not the victim. She was not the woman with thirty-six dollars in her checking account.

She was Serena. She was a mother. She was a survivor. She was home.
