Part 5: What Did Michael Sign Yesterday?

She backed away from him. “I don’t know.”

Sarah looked at the papers again. The forged signature. The transfer authorization. The purchase agreement. Pieces that had seemed separate now formed a single path.

“Who else had access to your computer?” she asked Michael.

He said nothing.

“Michael.”

“Calvin.”

“Who is Calvin?”

“My financial adviser.”

Elaine’s eyes narrowed. “Calvin Rusk?”

Michael nodded.

Mrs. Price made a quiet sound of recognition. “He came to the factory twice. He asked about the trust.”

Sarah remembered him. A thin man with silver hair and expensive shoes, always smiling as though he had already won. He had called her “young lady” in a tone that meant the opposite. He had advised Michael to place the company under professional management.

“Where is he?” Sarah asked.

Michael pulled out his phone. Three missed calls. One message.

Don’t speak to your mother. Leave through the back entrance. I can still protect you.

Elaine read the message and took a photograph of it.

The police entered the hallway.

Jessica began to shake harder. “He told me there would be no charges.”

Michael looked at her. “He told me the same thing.”

“Because he knew we were both in it.”

“He used us,” Michael said.

Sarah shook her head. “He used what you wanted.”

A detective asked everyone to remain where they were. His partner took the documents from the desk and placed them in clear evidence sleeves. The ordinary care of the gesture made the room feel unreal. A pen was capped. A page was turned. A key was labeled and bagged.

Sarah watched Michael surrender his phone.

He did not resist.

When the detective asked who had signed the documents, Michael looked at his mother.

“I did,” he said.

Jessica began crying again.

“And who told you Sarah was incompetent?”

Michael shut his eyes.

“I did,” he said. “I repeated what I was told.”

The detective asked who had created the forged signature. Jessica whispered Calvin’s name.

The truth emerged in pieces over the next hour. Calvin had approached Jessica first, offering to erase her father’s debt if she helped him acquire Bellweather’s assets. He had told her Sarah’s worker trust was outdated and vulnerable. He had shown her fabricated reports suggesting the company was about to collapse.

Jessica had then approached Michael, using every resentment he had carried since childhood. She told him Sarah had kept him from leadership because she did not trust him. She told him the workers laughed at him behind his back. She told him that if he did not act quickly, there would be nothing left for him.

Calvin supplied the papers.

Michael supplied the password.

Jessica supplied the forged medical letter claiming Sarah suffered from cognitive decline.

Together, they had built a lie large enough to make the truth look cruel.

But Calvin had made one mistake. He had used a copy of the old trust document that listed Sarah’s maiden name incorrectly. The same error appeared in the forged transfer papers. Elaine had noticed it when the bank called.

By midnight, Calvin Rusk was arrested at the airport with a suitcase full of cash, two passports, and a folder containing copies of Bellweather’s confidential records.
