Part 1: What Did Ethan Know?

“Open the door, Clara! My husband says this cottage is ours!”

Vanessa twisted the key again. It scraped inside the lock but wouldn’t turn.

Five suitcases stood behind her on the porch. She had come prepared to stay.

On the other side of the door, sixty-six-year-old Clara Whitaker held her breath. The Black widow could see Vanessa’s face through the glass: flushed, furious, and certain Clara was the only thing standing in her way.

“Clara. Open it.”

Clara’s hand rested against the door, but she didn’t move the lock. Her gaze slipped past Vanessa to the suitcases.

For a moment, she saw Lily sleeping inside the cottage after her father’s death. Clara could still remember how quiet the place had been then. It had mattered that Lily could be there.

Now Vanessa was on the porch, claiming the cottage because her husband said it was hers.

“No,” Clara said.

Vanessa let out a short laugh. She tried the key once more, harder this time, then pulled it free and held it up where Clara could see it.

“It’s my key,” she said.

Clara looked at it, then at Vanessa. “It doesn’t open the door.”

The laugh vanished. Vanessa stepped closer to the glass, her suitcases lined up behind her like she expected Clara to give in at any moment.

Clara’s jaw tightened. Beside the lock, a page lay within reach. She had left it there knowing this conversation might come.

Vanessa followed her eyes. “What’s that?”

Clara snatched up the page before she could talk herself out of it. The paper shook slightly between her fingers.

Vanessa’s expression changed. Until then, she had been arguing with a closed door. Now Clara had something in her hand that Vanessa hadn’t expected.

“Show me.”

Clara looked down at the page. It wasn’t an eviction notice. The word at the top was **TRUST**.

She had made decisions about this cottage with Vanessa’s children in mind. Lily’s name belonged on that page, too. None of that seemed to matter to Vanessa while she stood outside demanding a way in.

Clara raised the paper toward the glass.

Vanessa leaned close enough to read. Her eyes moved down the page, then stopped. She glanced back up at Clara, but Clara held it steady.

“Why didn’t you tell me about this?” Vanessa asked.

Clara didn’t answer. Vanessa read on, her finger tracing a line through the air on her side of the glass.

At the bottom was a witness signature.

Just as Vanessa reached it, her phone lit up. **ETHAN** filled the screen.

Her eyes flicked from the phone to the signature. She didn’t answer the call. She only stood there with five suitcases behind her, staring at a name she hadn’t expected to find.

The phone stopped vibrating. Before Vanessa could lower it, a message appeared, large enough for Clara to read backward through the glass.

Don’t let her call Miriam. Get inside. I’m coming.

Vanessa covered the screen with her palm.

“That’s his signature,” she said.

“Yes.”

“He told me you signed the cottage over to him.”

Clara lowered the page. Behind her, the refrigerator clicked on, an ordinary sound that made the silence outside feel enormous.

“My son witnessed my signature. That doesn’t make him the owner.”

Vanessa looked toward the road. Her car stood crooked beside the gate, its rear window fogged from within.

“Where are the children?” Clara asked.

“In the car.”

“How long?”

Vanessa’s mouth opened, then closed.
