I accepted, on the condition that I could lead the housing nonprofit’s case, pro bono, with full billing credit.

Lorenzo’s foundation doubled its funding that year. He didn’t tell me. I saw it in the annual report.

It was a Thursday, a month after the elevator, at 6:15 PM. The sun was still up, golden across the city.

I was packing my briefcase to leave on time, laughing with James about something stupid, when the elevator dinged and Lorenzo stepped out on our floor, holding two coffees.

He wasn’t supposed to be on our floor. Billionaires didn’t visit associate floors.

Everyone looked up. Then, slowly, smiled.

He walked to my desk and set one coffee down.

“Last one to leave again?” he asked quietly, teasing, gentle.

I looked at the clock. At the empty hallway that wasn’t empty anymore. At Mr. Alvarez waving from the lobby cameras on my phone. At the light in my office that I was about to turn off.

“No,” I said, and took the coffee, and took his hand where no one could see it below the desk, just for a second. “Not tonight. Tonight I’m leaving with you.”

The elevator doors closed behind us, and this time I wasn’t afraid at all.

Outside, the city was still bright, and we walked out together into the evening, my briefcase bumping light against his leg, our shadows stretching long and together across the sidewalk all the way home.
