Part 1: The Key in the Cage

<span class="tnbs-story-title-part-prefix">Part 1:</span> The Key in the Cage

The first thing I saw through the glass door was my son inside an old iron dog cage.

Noah was sitting on the concrete, one shoe gone, his little hands gripping the bars so tightly his knuckles had turned white.

A dog bowl filled with dry kibble sat right in front of him.

Vanessa stood a few feet away.

Arms crossed.

Watching.

For a moment, I couldn’t move. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t understand how the woman I had trusted with my child was standing there as if this were normal.

Then Noah lifted his face toward me.

His eyes were wet. His voice broke.

“Daddy… please help me.”

I dropped everything I was carrying.

The bags hit the ground. I didn’t care.

I rushed outside.

Vanessa’s confident look vanished the moment I reached the cage.

But I hardly noticed. I could think only about getting Noah out of there.

“What did you do?” I demanded.

She didn’t answer.

I grabbed the metal door and pulled. It was old, rusted, and resisted for a second before jerking open.
