“I didn’t understand it.”
“You work in commercial lending.”
He lowered his head.
Brooke turned away from him. The betrayal was not loud. It was a quiet internal movement, like a lock turning.
“You were both going to take this house,” she said.
Evelyn lifted her chin. “I was trying to protect my future.”
“You were trying to steal her home.”
“She had no children who would care for her.”
Marcus stepped forward. “She has us.”
Evelyn looked at him. “You barely visit.”
“I visited every weekend until your mother started telling me I was not family.”
“She was angry.”
“She was truthful.”
Clara touched Marcus’s arm. “Enough.”
“No,” Marcus said. His voice shook, but he did not retreat. “She has been enough for everyone in this house. She cooked, cleaned, paid the bills, drove Grandma to appointments, and stood in the kitchen while my mother gave her two dollars and called it generosity. Somebody needs to say what happened.”
Brooke flinched.
Marcus looked at her. “I’m sorry.”
She stared at him. “You knew?”
“I knew Grandma owned the house. I did not know how bad it had become.”
“You watched.”
“I tried to talk to you.”
“When?”
“Every time you told me your mother was exaggerating.”
Brooke’s face tightened. “You should have told me.”
“I did.”
The words left no room for defense.
Detective Morales stepped closer to Evelyn. “Mrs. Hart, I need you to come with me while we sort out the financial records.”
Evelyn’s composure shattered.
“You cannot do this to me.”
“No one is doing anything to you,” Clara said. “You did it to yourself.”
Evelyn stared at her, breathing hard. “You promised you would never leave me.”
“I promised you could stay until you found a safe place. I did not promise to let you destroy mine.”
The detective reached for Evelyn’s arm.
Evelyn pulled back. “Brooke, tell them.”
Brooke stood frozen.
“Tell them your mother is sick,” Evelyn pleaded. “Tell them I was confused. Tell them Clara misunderstood.”
Brooke looked down at the letter.
Her grandmother’s handwriting wavered across the page.
Choose the truth, even when the truth makes you lonely.
Brooke folded the letter carefully.
