“No!”
Three-year-old Lily Carter screamed as she raced across the marble ballroom.
Before anyone could stop her, she reached Ethan Moretti just as the eight-year-old lifted a silver fork toward his birthday cake.
Her tiny hand struck the porcelain plate.
The plate flew from Ethan’s hand and crashed onto the floor, sending frosting, strawberries, and broken white porcelain across the polished marble.
For one long second, nobody moved.
More than a hundred guests stared at the little girl who had just destroyed the birthday cake of Dominic Moretti’s only son.
Ethan stood frozen beneath the glittering crystal chandeliers, his fork still raised in the air.
His father had personally inspected every ingredient in that cake.
Ethan suffered from a severe allergy.
Everyone in the ballroom had been told the cake was safe.
Anna Carter hurried forward and pulled Lily against her chest. Her face had gone pale.
She had worked at the Moretti estate for six years, and she knew Dominic Moretti had little patience for disorder—especially when it involved his son.
Anna tightened her arms around Lily.
“Mr. Moretti, please forgive her. She’s only three years old. She doesn’t understand what she just did.”
The guests waited for Dominic to explode.
But he didn’t call security.
He didn’t shout.
Instead, the powerful estate owner walked toward Lily and slowly lowered himself onto one knee.
His voice was quiet.
“Lily, why did you do that?”
Lily’s lower lip trembled.
She looked at the ruined slice on the floor, then at Ethan’s untouched fork.
“I couldn’t let Ethan eat it.”
A strange silence spread through the ballroom.
Anna looked down at her daughter, confused and frightened.
Dominic studied Lily’s face.
“What did you see?”
Lily swallowed.
Then she raised one tiny hand and pointed toward the service hallway behind the ballroom.
