“I always made the bed.”
“You never made the bed before the quilt.”

June sat on the edge.
She touched the square from Malcolm’s shirt.
Ethan sat beside her.
Claire leaned against the dresser.
For a moment, no one spoke.
Then Ethan said, “I finished paying the loan.”
June looked at him.
“What?”
He smiled.
“I made a larger final payment this morning.”
“That was sixteen thousand.”
“Minus what I’ve already paid.”
“I know.”
“Business picked up.”
“You closed that consultancy.”
“I freelance on weekends now.”
June frowned.
“You’re overworking.”
He laughed.
“There she is.”
“Ethan.”
“I’m fine.”
Claire said, “He is.”
June looked between them.
“You both agreed?”
“Yes,” Claire said.
“He wanted the debt gone before we…”
She stopped.
June’s eyes narrowed.
“Before you what?”
Ethan looked at Claire.
Claire looked at Ethan.
June sat straighter.
“Oh, no.”
Ethan laughed.
“It’s not bad.”
“What?”
