“I could have. But it was work.”

Evan looked back at the sign.

That payment had bought the microphone. He had spent months feeling foolish for buying something good while his mother supposedly struggled.

Marlene touched the worn patch on its base.

“Your grandmother’s voice sounds lovely on those files.”

He stood very still.

In the worst months, he had begun to remember every kindness as something he must have misunderstood. Now he held proof of a quieter thing that had been happening at the same time: someone paying him fairly, someone making a sign, someone imagining a place that belonged to him.

Sophie brushed a fleck of dust from the painted letters.

“We kept it.”

Evan bent his head.

The sound he made embarrassed him for half a second. Then Marlene put her arms around him, and the embarrassment went.

Dinner cooled on the table.

Nobody mentioned it.

Afterward, Caleb held the sign above the studio door while Sophie checked that it was straight. Evan stepped back, laughed at their disagreement, and chose the height himself.

When everyone had gone, he washed the plates and opened the window an inch. Somewhere below, a bicycle rattled over the pavement. Warm air moved through the curtains.

He went into the studio and switched on the lamp.

His desk stood beneath the window. His microphone waited where he had put it. Beyond the doorway, a clean plate dried beside the sink.

Evan rested his hand on the door.

He could close it. He could leave it open.

He left it open, turned out the lamp, and walked barefoot into the quiet of his own home.
