The refrigerator hummed. Somewhere upstairs, a floorboard settled.

Kelly tapped the oldest entry.

“I couldn’t get a place on my own. She offered to hold money until there was enough for us to move in. Then it would cover our share here.”

“And you never asked me?”

“She said you didn’t want everybody discussing your plans.”

Evan looked at Linda.

“What plans?”

Linda folded one piece of the torn paper into a smaller square.

“You were always talking about getting your own place.”

“Because I thought you would eventually be able to pay your own bills.”

“That takes time.”

“Twenty-three months?”

Marlene held out her hand toward Kelly.

“Is that the only record?”

Kelly hesitated before taking out her phone. Her thumb shook against the screen.

“I have transfers. Messages.”

“Show him,” Linda said quickly. “Show him how much work I’ve done trying to keep everybody together.”

Kelly turned the screen.

The latest message was three days old.

Room ready Sunday. Evan agreed. Bring the beds before dinner so there’s no fuss.

Evan read it twice.

“My equipment?”

“Caleb put it in the hall,” Kelly said.

Caleb finally lifted his head.

“She told me you asked. I wrapped the monitor in my coat.”

His voice broke on the last word. He looked toward the stairs.

“I didn’t unplug anything until I took pictures.”

Evan pushed his chair back. Linda caught his wrist.

“Sit down. We’re having a conversation.”

He looked at her hand until she released him.

Upstairs, his folding desk leaned against the wall. Cables lay in a roasting pan. The microphone sat inside Caleb’s coat beside the monitor, carefully cushioned.

His bedroom door stood open.

Two narrow beds occupied the space where he had recorded lessons, advertisements, and the occasional audiobook. A stuffed rabbit lay on one pillow. His clothes had been pushed into black garbage bags.

He picked up the microphone.

There was a tiny patch on its base where the finish had worn away beneath his thumb. He rubbed it once.

Behind him, Sophie stopped halfway up the stairs.

“I can get boxes.”

He nodded without looking at her.

“And I can drive,” Caleb said from below.

Linda appeared at the foot of the staircase.

“You’re not taking everything tonight.”

Evan set the microphone gently inside its case.

“I’m taking everything that belongs to me.”

“If you stop paying, all of us could lose this house.”

There it was again: the whole household balanced on the edge of something, with his hands expected underneath.

Marlene came into the hall carrying her purse.

“He can stay with me.”

Linda’s face changed.

“You’ve been waiting to say that.”

“No,” Marlene said. “I’ve been waiting for you to say something that would make it unnecessary.”

For the next hour, the house filled with packing sounds. Sophie labeled cables. Caleb carried the desk. Kelly kept her children in the kitchen, speaking softly.

Linda followed Evan from room to room, offering smaller versions of the same arrangement. Half the rent. Electricity only. A contribution until Christmas.

He did not bargain.

At the door, Kelly approached with her phone.

“I sent you the receipt and the messages.”

Evan checked that they had arrived.

“Why did you tell me to work on the couch?”

She stared at the case in his hand.

“I thought you’d changed your mind about leaving. I thought you were making Linda choose between you and my kids.”

“So you decided I deserved it.”
