“You’re sleeping with my wife!” Mark’s accusation exploded through the room before he had taken in anything beyond the older man standing near the window. He had arrived convinced that weeks of unexplained visits finally had an answer.

Now Richard was in front of him, and every doubt Mark had tried to dismiss seemed to demand confirmation at once. Richard did not react.

That unsettled Mark more than denial would have. “She’s been coming here for weeks!” His voice rose again, but Richard remained composed.

Mark had spent too long watching trust erode through details that never seemed important enough on their own. A changed explanation.

An unexplained absence. A conversation that ended too quickly whenever he asked the wrong question.

Tonight, he believed those fragments had finally assembled into something obvious. Then Richard spoke.

“I was expecting you. Not her.” Mark stared at him.

The anger did not disappear. It simply lost its direction.

“What does that mean?” Richard’s expression remained controlled, and Mark suddenly became aware of how quickly he had entered the room already certain of the truth. He had expected excuses.

He had expected embarrassment. He had expected to catch two people scrambling to explain something they had been hiding.

Instead, Richard had just told him that Mark himself was the person who was supposed to be there. That made no sense.

Mark looked toward his wife. She had indeed been coming here for weeks.

That part had not been imagined. But the reason was not what Mark had believed.

Richard was a retired investigator. More importantly, he had once worked for Mark’s late father.

The information landed with a different kind of force. Mark’s father had been gone long enough that hearing someone invoke that connection immediately changed the shape of the room.

This was no longer simply about his marriage or the visits his wife had hidden from him. There was history here.

History involving him. Mark forced himself to stop speaking long enough to understand what he actually knew.

His wife had visited Richard repeatedly. Richard had worked for Mark’s father.
