He couldn’t answer.

Jake exploded.

“He’s lying because he wants you to hate me!”

Milo flinched.

David stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Jake pointed at Milo.

“He’s not even staying!”

Nobody moved.

The words hung in the room.

Sarah went very still.

“What did you just say?”

Jake’s expression changed.

Milo looked at him.

Sarah repeated the question.

“Why do you think Milo isn’t staying?”

Jake’s mouth opened.

Then closed.

David stared at his son.

“Jake.”

Jake backed toward the stairs.

“I heard you talking.”

Sarah’s face drained.

“Talking about what?”

Milo stopped breathing.

He had never known there was anything to overhear.

And suddenly the destroyed drawings were no longer the only thing he was afraid of losing. 👇

Sarah did not move. The corner of Milo’s ruined competition drawing remained pinched between her fingers while Jake stood halfway to the stairs, suddenly looking younger than fourteen.

“What did you hear?” she asked.

Jake glanced at David. “You were talking in the kitchen. Last week.”
