The scream came from somewhere inside the garage, muffled and thin, like it had been trapped beneath layers of ice. Then I heard one word that made every thought in my head disappear. “Daddy!”

Three weeks earlier, the divorce had become final.

Three weeks after that, Taylor sent me a message colder than the October night outside.

Pick up your stuff by Friday.

No hello. No explanation. Nothing from the woman I had once imagined growing old beside.

I could have waited until Friday.

Instead, something kept pressing at me, an uneasiness I could not explain, so on Thursday night I drove back to the house on Aspen Ridge Lane, hoping to collect the last few boxes without seeing Taylor.

It was nearly ten.

The Colorado air had the sharp bite of an early winter, and the neighborhood looked almost unnaturally peaceful beneath the streetlights.

Taylor’s car was gone.

The garage door was open.

Then I noticed another vehicle in the driveway.

Evelyn’s.

My former mother-in-law had always found reasons to be around the house. Even after the divorce, she said she was helping Taylor with our daughter, Lily.

For years, I had convinced myself her constant presence was simply family involvement.

Standing there that night, I felt the same discomfort I had spent too long ignoring.

I stepped into the garage.

Moving boxes lined one wall beside old furniture, broken toys, and the scattered pieces of the life Taylor and I had once shared.

Then I heard the scream.

“Daddy! Help me!”

Everything inside me snapped into motion.

The voice was coming from the far side of the garage.

From the large chest freezer.

I ran toward it and grabbed the handle with both hands.

For one horrifying second, the lid resisted.

Then it flew open.

Freezing air struck my face.

My heart seemed to stop.

Lily was curled into a tiny ball between frozen vegetables and packages of meat.

Her hoodie was stiff with frost.

Her lips were blue.

Her entire body shook so violently that the plastic beneath her rattled.

“Lily!”

I reached inside and pulled her against my chest.

She felt frighteningly cold.

Too light.

Too small.

“I’ve got you,” I kept saying. “Daddy’s got you. You’re safe.”

Her hands clutched my shirt while her teeth chattered uncontrollably.

I wrapped my jacket around her and carried her away from the freezer, rubbing her back as panic climbed through me.

“How long were you in there?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“Where’s Mom?”

Another shake.

I pulled out my phone.

Before I could make the call, Lily grabbed my wrist with both hands.

Her fingers were so cold they barely felt real against my skin.

“Daddy.”

Something in her voice stopped me.
