Part 9: He Snatched His Mother’s Bankbook—Then She Revealed Her Past

Trust returned in small amounts, with no promise that it would ever resemble what had come before.

At their first dinner in the cottage, Evelyn served chicken in mushroom cream sauce.

Daniel went quiet when he recognized it.

She noticed, but kept passing plates.

Halfway through the meal, Sophie asked about her grandfather, and Evelyn told them how he used to pretend he disliked mushrooms so she would give him more sauce.

The twins laughed.

Daniel smiled through wet eyes.

Nobody asked Evelyn for anything except the recipe.

Later, after coats were found and leftovers divided, her son lingered by the door.

“Thank you for having us.”

“You’re welcome.”

He looked toward the warm kitchen.

“May I call tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

“I don’t need anything.”

Evelyn met his eyes.

“Then tell me about your day.”

After they left, she checked the porch rail, locked the door, and carried a cup of tea to her favorite chair.

Outside the kitchen window, Sophie’s lavender cutting rested beneath a protective layer of mulch beside the older plants. Evelyn had planted it herself.

The house was quiet.

Her bankbook lay in the desk drawer. Her keys hung beside the door. There was nothing waiting for her that could not wait until morning.

Evelyn loosened her slippers and stretched her feet toward the warmth.

Then she picked up the novel she had been meaning to finish and turned to the page she had marked before she sold the cottage.
