The yellow envelope wouldn’t stop shaking in her hands.

Lena Park, 23, stood frozen at the back corner table of Arno’s Café.

Across from her sat Nikolai Voss. 39 years old. Dark hair silvering at the temples. A charcoal suit that probably cost more than her rent for a year.

He hadn’t touched his espresso.

He was just watching her.

“You came,” he said quietly.

Lena swallowed hard. Her faded gray sweater suddenly felt too thin, too cheap in this place.

“I said I would,” she whispered. “I brought the payment plan. For the repair.”

She had been dreading this moment for twenty-four hours.

It had started with a single careless mistake.

A battered silver Honda. A black luxury sedan. The sickening sound of metal scraping metal in an empty university parking lot.

A thin white scratch on glossy black paint.

She could have driven away. No witnesses. Misty morning. Security cameras pointed the other way.

No one would have ever known.

But her grandmother’s voice had stopped her.

*Character isn’t what you do when people are watching. It’s what you do when nobody will ever know.*

So Lena had torn a corner from her notebook and written with shaking hands:

*I’m so sorry. This was my fault. Please call me.*

She left her phone number and walked away, thinking no one had seen her.

She was wrong.

Two men in dark coats had photographed her license plate from across the street.

Twenty minutes later, Nikolai Voss found the note fluttering under his windshield wiper.

He read it once. Then again.

For fifteen years, everyone who approached him had wanted something.

Politicians. Business partners. Enemies who smiled while plotting behind his back.

Everyone lied.

Her note asked for nothing.

He slipped it into his breast pocket and made a call.

“Find the owner. Not a threat assessment. Just who she is.”

Lena spent that day counting the life she would have to dismantle to pay him back.
