The plate shattered against the kitchen floor.
“You will serve that meal.”
Sergeant Maria Torres looked at the broken porcelain, then at Lieutenant Colonel Harris.
“No, sir.”
The dining staff stopped moving.
A visiting general and several senior officers were waiting in the adjoining room.
Dinner was already ten minutes late.
Maria had prepared meals for commanders before.
She understood protocol.
She also understood food.
And thirty minutes earlier, she noticed that one sealed container of sauce had already been opened.
Nobody admitted opening it.
The kitchen had been secured.
Every ingredient had been inventoried.
That container should have remained sealed until Maria used it.
Instead, the lid was loose.
At first she assumed another cook opened it.
