Part 1: Trapped In An Elevator With The Man Everyone Fears

Part 1: Trapped In An Elevator With The Man Everyone Fears

The elevator doors sealed shut behind me, and I was alone with the one man everyone in this city was afraid of.

Lorenzo Colombo.

Billionaire. Investor. The kind of man whose name people whispered but never said too loud.

And he was standing three feet away from me, in a locked elevator, at 9:47 on a Tuesday night.

I clutched my briefcase harder. The leather handle was damp with sweat.

My fingers drifted toward the emergency button.

“Don’t.”

His voice was calm. Almost gentle.

“There won’t be any interruptions. Just you and me.”

He took one step closer.

My shoulder blades hit the mirrored wall behind me.

I had worked twelve-hour days for two years straight at Hoffman & Associates. I had survived impossible deadlines, cruel partners, and clients who treated me like furniture.

But nothing had prepared me for this.

“You’ve been working far too late,” he said quietly.

I stared at him.

“How do you know that?”

His eyes moved to the three thick contract files pressed against my chest. Then back to my face.

“Because for the past six months, you’ve been the last person to leave this building almost every night.”

The fluorescent light above us hummed.

I didn’t move.

I couldn’t.

This man had never spoken to me. I had never spoken to him. I was a second-year associate. Nobody. The kind of employee partners forgot existed the moment she walked out of the room.

But he had been watching me.

Not once. Not casually.

For six months.

Every late night. Every empty parking garage. Every time I was the last one there, fumbling with my keys under those flickering lights.

He knew.

Then his hand disappeared inside his jacket, and something in my chest went completely still.

He pulled out a sealed envelope.

No name on it. No markings. Just ivory paper folded neatly and pressed shut.
